Artificial Intelligence (AI): Dangers and Risks

Artificial intelligence (AI) might actually be the reason of humanity’s collapse. Humans have been experiencing a technological boom within the past 30 years from 1994 to 2024. Funny thing is flip phones were miles ahead of the original cellular phones. Now we have the power of a space computer within our hands using an iPhone, Samsung, or Pixel cell phone. From radios in our cars listening to horrible talk shows to full on podcasts on our Bluetooth car devices. Even the advent of faster computers, better gaming consoles, efficient chips, flat screen tv’s, and much more.

As we can see tech has been exponentially getting better, faster, and more intellectual. Now’s the time to mention our glorious future overlord or in other words artificial intelligence. We’re diving into these waters through the deep end and here we’ll tell you why it could be detrimental. Just like the creation of the atomic bomb, there’s been a shift in national developments for artificial intelligence as a whole. It could technically be the end of humanity due to several factors, but in the case of nukes we somewhat didn’t end it all for ourselves yet.

Artificial Intelligence

AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn. It’s a branch of computer science aiming to create systems capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation.

Key Components:

  • Machine Learning (ML): This is where machines learn from data to improve their performance over time without being explicitly programmed.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): AI’s ability to understand and interact using human language.
  • Computer Vision: AI’s capability to interpret and understand visual information from the world.
  • Robotics: Combining AI with physical machines to perform complex tasks.

2. Common Misconceptions:

  • Not Sentient or Conscious: Unlike in science fiction, real-world AI does not possess consciousness, emotions, or self-awareness. It operates based on algorithms and data, without personal experiences or feelings.
  • Does Not Necessarily Mean Robots: When many people think of AI, they picture robots. However, AI is mostly software-based and operates in a wide range of areas, from algorithms that recommend what to watch on streaming services to systems that help diagnose diseases in medicine.
  • Not Infallible or Always Intelligent: AI systems can make mistakes, especially when working with biased data or encountering situations they weren’t trained on. Their ‘intelligence’ is different from human intelligence; it’s more about processing and analyzing large amounts of data at high speeds.
  • Not Just About Mimicking Humans: Some AI systems are designed to perform tasks that are beyond human capabilities, like analyzing millions of data points in seconds or finding patterns in large datasets that humans cannot see.

3. The Current Reality: Today’s existence version is mostly “Narrow AI”, which means it’s designed to perform specific tasks (like playing chess, translating languages, or recommending products). We are far from creating “General AI”, which would have the ability to understand, learn, and apply its intelligence broadly like a human being.

Dangers of AI

Now that we understand that artificial intelligence is not sentient and is still in it’s prepubescent form, we can talk about the future. The reality is that it’s probably not going to be sentient for a long time and it may take decades for it to try and wipe humanity off the earth. If it wants to in the first place of course, but people can use the current forms of artificial intelligence in dangerous ways. The risks aren’t Terminator, but they could be much worse depending on what you consider world ending. From viruses to privacy we discuss it all underneath:

1. Privacy Invasion: Imagine someone constantly looking over your shoulder, noting down everything you do – that’s what AI can do in terms of privacy invasion. AI systems can analyze vast amounts of personal data, sometimes without our knowledge or consent. This raises concerns about how our data is used and who has access to it. Now you might have a problem if our government has access to this data, but image the possibilities if other governments have access to this data as well. Extortion, blackmail, and big brother might become truer than ever before.

2. Autonomous Weapons: AI can power weapons that think and act on their own. This sci-fi scenario is already becoming a reality with drones and robots that can select and attack targets without human input. The fear is that these weapons could be misused or malfunction, causing unintended harm. This wouldn’t necessarily mean Irobot, Terminator, or Ex Machina will come true as those would technically be sentient artificial intelligence. However, imagine programing an artificially intelligent fly killing robot that shoots chlorine at flies. Now imagine if it mistakes your eye for a fly and shoots chlorine at it. Now attach this concept to automatic turrets that are supposed to only shoot home invaders, but a kid loses a ball in your yard. Yea…..it can start to get kind of messy.

3. Deepfakes and Misinformation: Deepfakes are realistic but fake videos or audio clips created using AI. They can be used to spread misinformation or manipulate public opinion, potentially causing political and social issues. Imagine seeing a video of a leader declaring war, but it’s entirely fabricated by artificial intelligence. Right now it’s not perfect, but its only going to get better. Some popular podcasters like Joe Rogan are already complaining about this issue with his voice being used to sell fake products he’s never technically endorsed.

4. Unemployment and Economic Disruption: As AI takes over tasks traditionally done by humans, it could lead to job losses in sectors like manufacturing, customer service, and transportation. This shift may create new jobs in tech, but the transition could be challenging for many, leading to economic disruption. In reality it’s going to take a long time to setup a system where artificial intelligence is able to do some tasks that us humans do. However, for ordering food, customer service, call centers, and a few other things it can easily replace.

5. Bias and Discrimination: If an AI system is trained on biased data, it will make biased decisions. This can lead to unfair practices in hiring, lending, and law enforcement, disproportionately affecting certain groups of people. It’s like a computer program picking favorites based on flawed data. Attention has been brought to this regarding political agendas with disproportionate amount of mainstream media favoring the democratic party’s candidates as they are tightly embedded with the tech industry. Now anything one side says becomes true and anything else becomes false.

6. Loss of Human Control: Complex AI systems might become hard to control or predict, especially if they’re designed to learn and adapt on their own. This raises concerns about who is responsible when an AI system makes a mistake or acts in an unexpected way. The problem here is when we make something smarter, faster, and more intelligent than it can cause this thing to be able to easily trick it’s creators. Even little children find ways to manipulate their parents, but in this case the manipulation could come faster than we expect.

7. Cybersecurity Threats: AI can make cyber-attacks more sophisticated and harder to defend against. For example, AI could be used to create advanced malware or automate large-scale attacks, posing significant threats to individual and national security. Now as the artificial intelligence gets more crafty with it’s malware, computer viruses, and DDOS we would need to create better protection using artificial intelligence as well. Essentially it becomes a race of developing attack and defense strategized artificial intelligences.

8. AI Arms Race: Countries might compete to develop the most advanced AI, potentially prioritizing power over safety. This competition could lead to the development of powerful AI systems that might be difficult to control or could be used in harmful ways.

9. Social Manipulation: AI can analyze and exploit patterns in human behavior to influence decision-making. This can be used in advertising to encourage purchases or in political campaigns to sway voters, often without people realizing how they’re being influenced. A great example of this are the effects social media had on children creating them to become more anxious, depressed, suicidal, and insecure. Now if technology can do that imagine a steroid version of social media, propaganda, and manipulation. We would be doomed from the very beginning.

10. Unpredictable Development and Singularity: The singularity is a theoretical scenario where artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence. This could lead to unpredictable developments, as we might not fully understand or control what a super intelligent AI does or decides.

Potential Weapon

Bioweapon

AI has the potential to significantly accelerate research in genetics and molecular biology. While this can lead to beneficial medical breakthroughs, in the wrong hands, it could also be used to design pathogens or make existing viruses more dangerous. Artificial intelligence can analyze vast biological datasets to identify potential modifications that could make a virus more lethal, contagious, or resistant to current treatments.

One of the more frightening prospects is the use of artificial intelligence to create pathogens that are specifically designed to target certain populations based on genetic markers. This would be a form of biological warfare unlike any seen before, where the weapon is tailored to be effective against a particular group of people based on their genetic characteristics. Artificial intelligence can automate many of the tasks involved in biological research, from data analysis to experimental design.

This could potentially allow for the rapid development and testing of harmful biological agents, far outpacing the ability of regulatory bodies or international watchdogs to monitor and control such activities. The dual-use nature of biotechnology research – where the same tools and knowledge can be used for both helpful and harmful purposes – makes it hard to regulate without hindering beneficial scientific progress.

Artificial intelligence adds another layer of complexity, as it can be used covertly and remotely, making it harder for authorities to detect and prevent malicious activities. Developing biological weapons raises profound ethical questions. The potential for creating targeted pathogens that exploit specific genetic vulnerabilities poses moral dilemmas about the nature of warfare and the sanctity of human life.

Unlike conventional or even nuclear weapons, biological weapons have the potential to cause pandemics. An engineered pathogen could spread uncontrollably, transcending borders and impacting not just the intended target but potentially the global population.

Chemical Weapon

Theoretically, it is possible to develop an artificial intelligence that could assist in creating chemical weapons. However, this would be a highly unethical and illegal use of artificial intelligence. Like many technologies, is a tool that can be directed towards a wide range of applications, both positive and negative. The potential to be used in harmful ways, including the development of weapons (chemical, biological, or otherwise), is a significant concern in the field of artificial intelligence ethics and governance.

In the wrong hands, these capabilities could be used to synthesize information from existing chemical research, optimize harmful chemical reactions, or even design new types of chemical agents. There is a growing recognition among governments, international organizations, and the artificial intelligence research community of the need to regulate and monitor the development and application of these technologies to prevent their misuse, including in the context of weapon development.

Conclusion

The intersection of AI and biotechnology indeed opens up possibilities that were once in the realm of science fiction. While the positive applications of this merger are vast, including in areas like personalized medicine and vaccine development, the potential for misuse in the creation of biological weapons is a significant concern. It underscores the need for robust ethical guidelines, international cooperation, and vigilant regulatory frameworks to oversee research in these areas and prevent the malicious use of these powerful technologies.

The advancement of artificial intelligence offers exciting possibilities but also comes with significant responsibilities. As we continue to integrate artificial intelligence into our lives, we must do so with caution and a focus on ethical considerations. As we talked about earlier there are possibilities for it to save humanity instead of causing it’s quick demise.
