Originally the setting was somewhat jarring as it’s difficult to picture humans in a toy setting, but the creators of the movie did a wonderful job at including realism with the fake undertones of a toy-like world.
Our original character casted by Margot Robbie was a stereotypical Barbie and all the other ones live in this toy world. They enjoy everyday as if it’s going to last forever and every single day is the best day in this world. They have a certain routine in their daily lives which embodies what little girls would do with their toys. For example, getting up in the morning, getting breakfast, showering, riding in the pink cars, going to the beach, living in homes without walls, and of course we cannot forget about the Kens.
Early on in the movie you are given an odd opening which includes our stereotypical Barbie thinking about death when the toys should not be having this type of mentality. Everyday for them needs to be the best day ever filled with enjoyment, parties, and going to the beach. This thought of death sparks the entire storyline which makes our main character go to the odd one’s home to try and get answers as to why the changes to her are happening. Essentially a link with the toy and the real world human who used to play with her has been established causing chaos in the toy’s world.

As our character begins to try and obtain her original toy life back, she must go to the real world and attempt to fix her original owner. The idea behind the odd one’s theory is that the reason Margot Robbie’s stereotypical Barbie character is having changes is that the original person who owned her in the real world is going through some sort of depression. The movie definitely does show the ignorance of toys in the real world and the lack of idealism that society as a whole has embarked throughout the years.
In Barbieland all the people who run the toy world are women including women construction workers, presidents, and political leaders. However, it was a stark change when they went to the real world as everything in reality was in reverse. The movie’s plot tried to show that the ideal world the Barbie’s live in isn’t reality and the difficulties of women in the real world is horrible compared to the enjoyment they have in Barbieland. Let’s also not forget about Ken who’s entire life in the Barbieland depends on his acceptance from Barbie’s.
Ken also goes on this journey in the real world understanding how limited power their power is in Barbieland. In attempts to change his toy world he does his best to understand patriarchy and bring back books from the real world into Barbieland. Through his attempts he’s able to swing away from the authorities who created the toys and successfully brought back to information to his toy world. While Ken has been going on an adventure of his own, our main character was able to find her original owner giving her a glimpse of her life. There was just a bit of a mix up with the kid of the real owner who Barbie originally thought was the actual owner.
The symbolism and societal ideologies of this movie show ignorant minds interacting with reality. We can see a major difference from the toy world and how wonderful everything was portrayed. Once in the real world there was judgement, complications, grief, sexuality, harassment, depression, power, and much more. Seeing this from the eyes of innocent minds helps allow the watcher to understand everything we have to go through on a constant basis as we live in the real world. Not everything is butterflies and rainbows in the real world as we have to deal with all the issues somewhat created by society as a whole. The symbolism of Barbie and Ken is somewhat an idealistic shift of an innocent mind being corrupted by the realness of the world.

The movie is easily really funny from the moment we witness our first Ken to the moment we see Allen. The movie has a bunch of well known characters including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Michael Cera, Will Ferrel, and Simu Liu. The cast is hands down entertaining throughout the movie and adds so much comedic undertones during the seriousness that the movie is trying to portray. Our iconic characters don’t only do a great job at portraying innocent minds who are corrupted by the real world, but they also make us feel like Barbieland is definitely a real place in the universe.
Comedy is definitely not abandoned at any point during the movie. Even during the opening where all the Kens wanted to beach each other, and to the end when patriarchy was brought to the Barbie world altering the power situation in the movie. Throughout the entire process you can definitely enjoy the way the movie was written and directed. Again it’s very odd to be laughing at one of the awkward jokes in the movie and then being hit with a serious topic such as loneliness, death, depression, womanhood, manhood, and power struggles between the sexes.
It’s a little difficult to be going over the storyline without having much spoilers added to the movie. In essence if you’re curious as to what all the hype is about you should definitely go and watch the movie. It’s one of the more prominent things that are happening in today’s culture as many people have been talking about the movie. However, remember that it’s only a matter of time before people begin to shift their mental thought patterns to something new.
